SGPC Begins Planting Shrubs on the Roofs of Sri Harmandir Sahib Complex

05 Mar 2019 08:52 PM PSTCHANDIGARH, Punjab—In an attempt to neutralize the poisonous effects of rising pollution around sanctum sanctorum Sri Harmandir Sahib, the apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee had launched a campaign last year to plant shrubs in the surroundings of the holiest Sikh shrine. During the first phase of this two phased campaign, the concept of vertical gardening has been successfully implemented on the ways leading to the sanctum sanctorum.

After completing the first phase, the SGPC has started plantation of shrubs on the roofs of Sri Harmandir Sahib complex in the second phase. In a kick-off ceremony of this second phase, the SGPC staff planted shrubs on the roof of Management Block on March 4.
Sharing the development with media, the SGPC’s chief secretary Dr. Roop Singh informed that special shrub beds have been prepared on the roofs of various buildings situated in Sri Harmandir Sahib complex. “With the permission of SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal, the concept of vertical gardening will also be implemented in other Gurdwaras being run by the SGPC,” he added.
