17 Sep 2018 07:06 AM PDTNEW DELHI, India—In an attempt to make the Delhi based Sikh shrines environment friendly, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has decided to install biogas plants in major 10 historic Sikh shrines to cook ‘langar’ from clean energy. Notably, the DSGMC currently purchases Piped Natural Gas (PNG) from IGL for cooking ‘langar’ in all these 10 historic Sikh shrines in Delhi.
It is learnt that the DSGMC would able to tackle two problems simultaneously with the installation of Biogas plants i.e. by getting low cost fuel for cooking ‘langar’ from its own Kitchen waste on daily basis.
Interacting with media, the DSGMC president S. Manjit Singh GK said that initially two biogas plants will be installed at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib which generate largest biodegradable waste among all historic shrines as around 30,000 devotees partake food daily in these two Sikh shrines. “The   biogas plant would be set up in collaboration with the international repute organic waste convertor company and is likely to be funded by MNC under its ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ (CSR) head,” he said.
GK further said that the DSGMC has approved a proposal to rope in reputed consultant as adviser for the project which will find a suitable agency for executing the project and also supervise its implementation on behalf of DSGMC.
“The plants are expected to be operational by October 2018 at both Gurdwaras and will have the capacity of handling 1500 quintal of food, vegetables and kitchen waste annually”, GK said. It further said that the remaining community kitchens of all historic Sikh shrines will be converted on bio fuel by the end of year 2019 in a phased manner.
