CHANDIGARH, Punjab—After successfully convincing the Sarbat Khalsa appointed acting Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Dhian Singh Mand to end Bargari agitation with high promises, the Congress led Punjab government depicted its true face on December 11 when it didn’t even talk about the political Sikh prisoners while announcing its decision to increase the parole period of prisoners with good conduct from the existing 12 weeks to 16 weeks during a calendar year.

It may be recalled here that the Punjab government had earlier given a positive gesture about the release of political Sikh prisoner by writing letters to the other state governments and the Union government of India. The Punjab government had even announced to release prisoners on the basis of good conduct during the kicking off event of the 550th birthday celebrations, but it ended up only with a decision of extending parole time of the convicts.
Sikh24 has learnt that the Punjab government will amend the subsection 2 of section 3 of the Punjab Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act, 1962, and introduce a Bill in this regard in the Punjab assembly’s winter session starting tomorrow. The prisoners with good conduct can avail the 16-week parole in one go in view of the 550th birthday celebrations. Later on, this parole of 16 weeks could be availed in a calendar year on quarterly basis i.e. after every 3 months.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Punjab government has installed a sharp fence around the grain market of Bargari so that Sikhs couldn’t gather there in future.
