SGPC marks 122nd martyrdom anniversary of Saragarhi martyrs

12 Sep 2019 07:37 AM PDTCHANDIGARH, Punjab—The apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee today marked the 122nd martyrdom anniversary of 21 Sikh warriors who had attained martyrdom while bravely battling against 10000 to 12,000 Afghans. A religious program in this concern was organized at Gurdwara Saragarhi situated near Sri Harmandir Sahib.Following the culmination of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, Hazoori Raagi Jatha of Bhai Simranjeet Singh delighted the Sikh sangat with melodious Kirtan. After Kirtan, Bhai Balwant Singh performed the Ardas.
Addressing the religious discourse on this occasion, Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib Giani Amarjit Singh said that there is a long list of Sikh martyrs in history. He appealed the current generation to take an inspiration from the sacrifices made by the martyrs and work for the high morale of Sikh community.
Family members of some Saragharhi martyrs were also honored on this occasion with Siropaos (robe of honor).
The Battle of Saragarhi is considered to be one of the greatest last stands in history. 21 soldiers of the 36 Sikh Regiment fought an army of over 10,000 to 12,000 Afghans and killed more than 600 of them before perishing to enemy bullets.
