NEW DELHI, India—
Starting hearing on the Sajjan Kumar’s petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s verdict of convicting him for the whole life in a Sikh genocide case, the Supreme Court of India today issued notice to the CBI about the Sajjan Kumar’s petition. However, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi made it clear that it would consider the Kumar’s plea for suspension of sentence and grant of bail after six weeks.
It may be recalled here that Sajjan Kumar was imprisoned for life by the Delhi High Court on December 17 in a case pertaining to brutal killing of five members of a Sikh family in the Raj Nagar of Delhi’s cantonment area on November 1, 1984.
“The criminals escaped prosecution and punishment for over two decades. It took as many as 10 committees and commissions for the investigation into the role of some of them to be entrusted in 2005 to the CBI, 21 years after the occurrence,” the HC had said.
Sajjan Kumar had surrendered before the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Aditi Garg on December 31 last year. He was sent to Mandoli jail situated in the North-East of India’s national capital New Delhi.
