1984 Sikh Genocide: Yogi Constitutes SIT to Probe Kanpur Cases
Posted:
06 Feb 2019 06:48 AM PSTLUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh—Following the directions of the Supreme Court of India, the BJP led Uttar Pradesh government spearheaded by Yogi Adityanath has constituted a four member Special Investigation Team to investigate the massacre of innocent Sikhs in Kanpur during the 1984 Sikh genocide. The SIT has been asked to submit its final report within six months.
It is learnt that the Ex-DGP Atul has been nominated as a head of this Special Investigation Team. Other members in the SIT include retired district judge Subhash Chandra Agarwal, and retired additional director (Prosecution) Yogeshwar Krishna Srivastava while the Kanpur police chief will be the member secretary.
Initially, the SIT would look into the heinous crimes committed during that period first and if need be would investigate it further under Section 173 (8) of the CrPC.

It may be recalled here that about 127 Sikhs were brutally murdered by the fanatic Hindu mobs in Kanpur during the 1984 Sikh genocide. FIRs were registered in only few of those cases in police stations like Nazirabad and Bajaria but no action was taken at that time. Later, the Police also destroyed the record of these cases due to which the victims couldn’t get justice even after 34 years.

The Supreme Court of India had made direction to the Uttar Pradesh government after getting approached by Manjeet Singh.
