1984 Genocide Memorial: Giani Raam Singh Meets Giani Gurbachan Singh
Favoring the construction of the Sikh Genocide  Memorial, Giani Raam Singh of Damdami Taksal submitted a memorandum to the appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh proposing certain changes in the structure. The changes were unanimously approved by various Sikh organizations at a meeting of Shabad Guru Parchar Sant Samaj. The memorandum proposed the introduction of touch screen monitors in the building depicting the detailed background, mentioning the cause and consequences of the year 1984. Giani Raam Singh  said that the entire history of the Sikh struggle from the Sikh Nirankari clashes of 1978 to the anti-Sikh pogroms of 1984 should be specified. In addition, the names of all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the army's genocide mission, officially called Operation Blue Star, should be highlighted and given full reference along with Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindrawale. The names of Kehar Singh, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh who were involved in Indira Gandhi's execution should also be cited to educate the future generations of their contributions. He recommended the installation of large pictures of Bhindrawale in the complex, a change much opposed by members of SGPC who have already removed a wall clock depicting the picture of Sant Bhindrawale terming it to be controversial. With the ongoing controversy between Damdami Taksal and SGPC, the recent announcements made by Giani Raam Singh have clearly stated his opinion in favour of the memorial. The SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar and Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma  have been arguing over the issue for the past few weeks. The SGPC, which has close ties to the government, has expressed unease over the mention of Bhindrawale's name in the memorial saying it would jeopardize peace and harmony in the state . The decision by the SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar is eagerly anticipated by both sides and will have an effect on the Panth's remembrance of history in the future as well. Since 1984, through concerted efforts by the government, Sikh and Punjabi culture has been on the decline. The memorial would help to boost moral amongst Sikhs and ensure that the sacrifices of Sikhs for justice are not forgotten.
