  Santosh Kamath was the poster boy of the mutual-fund industry in the debt market till his fund, Franklin Templeton, was knocked out by the Covid-19 crisis. All by himself, Kamath built a new category of credit funds which invested in low-rated debt for higher returns. He had a penchant for taking big risks, but would often pull them off. However, this time the situation is unprecedented.

India’s debt market has taken a hit with the Franklin Templeton crisis. Over the years, many initiatives taken to increase participation in the debt market have languished. One of the primary reasons has been the inability of the RBI and Sebi to jointly work towards making the necessary changes to this market.
