*Time to celebrate team Udta Punjab! High Court just gave you a clean chit!*
*Sorry if I’m gonna sound rude in my next line but In Your Face, CBFC!
Okay, maybe that’s one emotion a lot of us wanted to say it for a long time now. The Censor Board already wrecked a lot of our favourite films by using their scissorhands skills but looks like Udta Punjab managed to miss out from their clutches. Before the release itself, the film had a lot of buzz of how dark and twisted it would be. However, suddenly Mr Nihalani and his team had an epiphany where they decided to chop off most of the aesthetics of the film. Thank god the film flew out of CB’s nest!*
*When the 89 cuts bomb fell on the production house, they immediately decided to take the matter to the court and get justice from them. With Anurag Kashyap‘s aggressive approach towards avoiding censorship and Pahlaj Nihalani’s take on getting a lot of things edited, the matter went to the High Court. A sessions court was held yesterday where they heard both the sides of the issue. However, they asked CB to justify the reasons behind censoring the points mentioned.
The hearing was again held today and the film just received clean chit with only one scene to be edited! The scene where Shahid Kapoor urinates on the crowd during a concert was told to be removed while the other points stated by the CB was told unnecessary.*
*Time for celebration Udta Punjab team! Looks like you can now fly high! Although the verdict will be pronounced on Monday i.e. 13th June. Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below. And stay tuned to this space as we bring fresh updates on the film!*

*Why insist on deleting Punjab signboard, asks HC*
*SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT*
*While CBFC justifies suggested cuts, producer says they are central to the film*
*The Bombay High Court on Thursday, heard objections raised by the producers of the film Udta Punjab against cuts suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification and also heard the body’s justifications for the same.*
*The High Court sought an explanation from the Censor Board over its insistence on deleting the Punjab signboard in the film that deals with drugs. The CBFC submitted that all 13 changes, including deletion of Punjab in the film title, suggested by its revising committee were justified and proper.*
*Phantom Films and producer Vikas Bahl moved the HC against the 13 suggestions.*
*A Division Bench of Justices S.C. Dharmadhikari and Shalini Phansalkar Joshi heard senior counsel Ravi Kadam appearing for the producers and Advocate Advait Sethna representing CBFC.*
*‘Standards should evolve’*
*The senior counsel said the cuts suggested by the body were central to the film. He argued that the standards of certification should evolve. The modern audience was mature and would not get depraved by references to
drugs in the film.*
*Advocate Advait Sethna, on the other hand, said that the cuts were suggested on the grounds of sovereignty, integrity and morality laid down by the law. The film was not suitable for unrestricted exhibition, he said.*
*The court then asked how the integrity of the state would be affected by just pulling down one signboard.*
*The court also mentioned the film Go, Goa, Gone and said movies had got away with much worse in the past. *
*The court adjourned the matter to Friday.*

*Remove references to Punjab, CBFC tells ‘Udta Punjab’ makers*
*The makers of Bollywood film “Udta Punjab” are said to have been asked by the Revising Committee of the censor board to remove all references to Punjab — a decision perhaps taken under pressure from the ruling
dispensation in the state which is dealing with a festering problem of drugs.*

*“Udta Punjab”, a Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer movie, delves into how the youth there have succumbed to drugs.*
*The release of the movie in a year when the state is less than nine months from assembly elections is likely to be seen as politically disastrous for the state’s ruling party, the Shrimoni Akali Dal which is a partner with the ruling-National Democratic Alliance at the centre.*

*Earlier, there was buzz that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had refused a release certificate for the Abhishek Chaubey directed movie, but later the makers had clarified that no ban was imposed on it. On
Monday, reports emerged that the Revising Committee of the CBFC has asked the makers to make 89 cuts.*
*A source in the know of developments told IANS that the board’s primary demand is to remove all the references to Punjab, but the number of cuts is not clear as they are still awaiting an “official letter”.*
*“We haven’t received a letter yet. We don’t know how many cuts, but we can tell you that their basic demand is that any reference of Punjab should be deleted from the movie… Which then means a lot of cuts,” the source told IANS.*
*The source added: “They want the film to be set in a fictitious space and not Punjab. Makers are not going to adhere to it. They will protest. If that means going to a higher tribunal, we will go. Otherwise, we will go to
the court.”*
*It is believed the CBFC’s decision is politically motivated, but the Akali Dal never officially sought a ban on “Udta Punjab”. Senior leaders in the party told IANS in Chandigarh that the party leadership was feeling
uncomfortable with the way the drug abuse problem of Punjab was being projected and could harm the political interests of the Akalis in assembly polls in February next year.*
*Studies done by various agencies and organisations in recent years have indicated that substance abuse, including drugs, is rampant across Punjab, especially in rural areas. The extent of the substance abuse is put by some surveys at over 70 per cent out of Punjab’s 2.8 crore population.*
*Co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikas Bahl as part of their Phantom Films banner, along with Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Aman Gill and Sameer Nair, “Udta Punjab” is slated to release on June 17.2016*
*For now, the makers are not planning to shift the release date. “We are planning to host a screening for the cast and crew here on Monday,” the source said.*
