Introduction: In India, it is largely cases involving the poor and the down-trodden – who are the victims of class-bias – which result in an imposition of a death penalty. Here one hardly finds a rich or affluent person going to the gallows.
Therefore, it is apparent that the death penalty, as it is used now, is discriminatory. It strikes mostly against the disadvantaged sections of society, showing its arbitrary and capricious nature – thus rendering it unconstitutional.
Introduction: We are asking all members of the Sikh community to be vigilant. We are urging all Sikh Gurdwaras (temples) to review their security procedures and to be in contact with their local police departments, possibly to request additional patrols. We also recommend that local law enforcement be consulted during the upcoming weekend services as Sikhs gather in large numbers for prayer service (kirtan diwans).
Introduction: “When the offence in respect of which extradition is requested is punishable by death under the Requesting State and the laws of the Requested State do not permit such punishment for that offence, extradition may be refused unless the Requesting State furnishes such assurances as the Requested State considers sufficient that the death penalty shall not be imposed, or, if imposed shall not be enacted.â€

Introduction: In the letter, Tom Mulcair states that wife of Prof. Bhullar as a Canadian citizen expects the Canadian Government to bring attention to the situation regarding her husband. Mulcair further asked Harper to press India to abolish death penalty.
Introduction: Prof. Bhullar is an Indian national who applied for asylum in Germany in 1994 but was deported back to India where he was sentenced to death in 2001. The German courts have recognized that his deportation was due to procedural errors and was in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Introduction: Various Sikh organizations wrote letters to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, U.S. Department of State, and U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom to request their involvement to stop the hanging of Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar. The letters were jointly signed by different Sikh organizations, including Ensaaf, Jakara Movement, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), Sikh Coalition, Sikh Research Institute, United Sikhs, and Voices For Freedom.

Introduction: On behalf of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) I wish to state that we are ashamed that Justices of the Supreme Court GS Singhvi and Gyan Sudha Misra have asked the senior Supreme Court counsel Colin Gonsalves whether the petitioner Sikh’s for Justice is a “foreign body altogether as even your members are not Indiansâ€. This bench further asked the petitioners counsel whether the organization he represented “was involved in terrorist activities in Punjab in the 1980sâ€.
We think this is a disgraceful and demeaning act of the two judges to ask such communal questions because the Sikhs have been demanding justice since 1984 when they were subjected to the crime of genocide being perpetrated against them by the Hindu state. Such questions show the biased, prejudiced and poisonous minds of the two bigoted, right-wing Hindu judges.
